St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, January 20, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Our Annual Parish Meeting and luncheon will be Sunday, January 27 immediately following worship.  At this meeting we will elect three new vestry members, approve our 2019 budget and hear brief reports from a few of our lay leaders.  Also, as is always the case when we get together as a church family, we will enjoy simply being together!  The goal of both myself and the vestry is that our Annual Meeting will be a time when essential church business is handled both professionally and relatively quickly.  We believe this is a time for celebrating God’s work in our midst in the past year, while joyfully looking forward to all that God will be doing in the coming months.  I hope to see you there!

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, January 13, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

The funeral service for Otis Howe, Jr. will be held Friday, January 11 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s.   A luncheon will be served in the undercroft following the funeral and brief graveside service.  All are invited to join the family at the luncheon.  Otis loved his Lord and his church.  He was a faithful member of St. John’s for many decades and will be missed.  May Otis rest in peace and rise in glory.

This coming Sunday, January 13, at 7:30 p.m., St. John’s will host a concert by The Memphis Chorale, sponsored by Warfield Concerts.  Our organist, Dr. Gabriel Statom, is Director of this incredibly talented group of singers.  One of the members of the group is Ms. B.J. Webster, who was our soloist at the Christmas Eve Service.

Our annual Parish Meeting and luncheon will be held on Sunday, January 27 immediately following worship.  This is a change from the original date of January 20th. Due to a heavier than usual load in the office this week and next, we will need additional time to prepare.

At the Annual Meeting we will be electing three new vestry members.  As of now, two persons standing for election for a three-year term on the vestry are Ann Lee and Mike Fielder.  The 2019 St. John’s operating budget will be presented for approval and a few of our leaders will be presenting brief oral reports.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, January 6, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

This coming Saturday, January 5, we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Danny Schieffler to St. John’s.     Fr. Danny will be leading a workshop on Contemplative Prayer. The workshop starts at 9 a.m. with breakfast in the undercroft and will wrap up before noon.  The Spiritual Development Team at St. John’s is sponsoring this event with Fr. Danny as a means of encouraging all of us to begin the New Year by cultivating a deeper and more meaningful life of prayer.  Fr. Danny grew up in Helena and is well known by pretty much everyone at St. John’s.  He is currently the Rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Little Rock.

Our Annual Parish Meeting will be held Sunday, January 20, immediately following worship.  Lunch will be served and we will elect three new vestry members, approve the 2019 budget and give thanks for the many blessings of the past year.

Blessings, F. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, December 23, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Christmas is upon us!  This coming Sunday, December 23, is the fourth, and last, Sunday of Advent.  It has gone by so quickly!  Next Monday we will gather at 5:30 p.m. for our Christmas Eve Candlelight Service.  This is one of the most beautiful services of the Church Year at St. John’s.  If you are in town, I encourage you to make this lovely service part of your Christmas celebration.  If you have family in town, please invite them to join you.  We will continue our observance of our Lord’s birth with a Service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 30, during our principal service of worship at 10:30 a.m.

On the first Saturday of the New Year, January 5, Rev. Danny Schieffler will present a program on Contemplative Prayer.  We will gather at the church at 9 a.m. for breakfast, followed by Fr. Danny’s program.  We should be finished by 11:30 or so.  I can’t think of a better way to start the New Year than by strengthening our life of prayer.

Please note on your calendar the date of our Annual Parish Meeting is Sunday, January 20, following worship.  Lunch will be served.  Among other things, we will approve our 2019 budget and elect three new vestry members.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, December 16, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Last week I received a phone call from St. John’s member Henry Jordan informing me that a family he knows had been burned out of their home.  The family consists of a father, mother and two teenage daughters.  I gave them some money from my Priest’s Discretionary Fund.  They also received a relatively small amount of money from the Red Cross, as well as some individuals who knew them. The good folks at the Isle of Capri Casino gave them two hotel rooms for one week and they are now in the process of seeking permanent housing.  The St. Francis Committee of St. John’s has provided some additional funds.  All of these gifts are helpful and greatly appreciated.  The fact, though, is that these folks lost absolutely everything.  They escaped the fire with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. In the seasons of Advent and Christmas we are reminded of a Savior who came into the world as a baby born to poor parents.  He announced his ministry in the synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth by quoting the prophet Isaiah, “

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

We, too, proclaim good news to the poor when we serve them in the name of our Lord. Anyone who would like to contribute to this family may do so by making a check out to St. John’s and mailing or delivering it to the church.  Please note on your check that it is for the family who was burned out.  We will make sure one hundred percent of what you give is delivered to this family.  As we find out more about needs such as furniture, bedding, etc., we will pass that along to you.

Our Christmas Eve Service will be at 5:30 p.m. Please note that this is a change of time from what was in last week’s newsletter.  Our new organist, Dr. Statom, will be playing for the service. Also, we are pleased that a guest soprano soloist from Memphis will be with us.  Please start now inviting friends and family to what is one of the most beautiful services of the year at St. John’s!

Morning Prayer will be offered on Tuesday mornings at 8:30 during Advent.  The remaining dates are December 11 and 18.  This is a brief service, lasting about 15-20 minutes.  Participants can use their own Book of Common Prayer or use one from the pew rack at church.  Morning Prayer is a wonderful way of starting your day throughout the year

There will be another opportunity for personal spiritual development on Saturday, January 5, 2019, when Rev. Danny Schieffler visits St. John’s to lead a program on Centering Prayer.   Fr. Danny is the Rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Little Rock and has deep roots in Helena-West Helena.  This program will take place on Saturday morning between 9 and 12.   A continental breakfast will be served.  I hope you will participate in this opportunity to learn more about prayer as well as welcoming Fr. Danny on this visit to his hometown.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +
