St. John’s Episcopal Church

Last week I participated in a zoom meeting with Bishop Benfield and other clergy from our diocese to discuss the reopening of our churches. Clergy in our diocese were in agreement with Bishop Benfield that we do not want to rush the return to gathering physically until there are clear indicators that the curve of infections of Covid-19 in Arkansas is flattening. As much as we miss meeting together physically, we do not want to move too quickly and risk sickness and possibly death for our members, many of whom fall into the high risk category. My sense from the meeting was that while we have not yet set a date for a return to gathering physically, we are getting closer to that happening. I will keep you posted on news from our bishop on this subject.

At this time, we plan to continue to provide a video recorded service each Sunday. The response to these services from our congregation has been very positive. Our goal will be to usually record a full Eucharistic service.  Last week two persons in our congregation each gave me a copy of a prayer they found very meaningful during this time when we cannot all physically receive Holy Communion. I believe this lovely prayer captures the intents of our hearts in this difficult time:

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you and unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen

As always, please continue to be the Body of Christ by staying in touch with each other, especially with those who live alone or are not well. I try to do the same, but it is possible that I might miss something, so please let me know if you become aware of  needs I may not be aware of.
