St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, September 8, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

After taking a break for several weeks, the Adult Sunday School Class will resume on Sunday, September 8 with a study of the life of Moses.  We will be using the book Moses, by Adam Hamilton.  Hard cover copies will be provided to all participants.  In the accompanying DVD we will be introduced to places in Egypt that were central to the life of Moses.  In the introduction to his book, Rev. Hamilton writes,

“Moses. The epic account of his life, together with the deliverance of the Israelite slaves from bondage in Egypt, is the defining story of the Jewish people. For Christians, Moses’ life serves as the backdrop for much that is found in the Gospels. Throughout history, his story has continued to speak to each successive generation.

I hope this book will not only help readers come to know Moses, but see how his life and story speak to our lives and stories today. Moses’ story is an important part of sacred Scripture; as such, Jews and Christians believe it reveals something to us about God, about ourselves, and about God’s will for our lives.

As always, if there is interest, I will gladly lead this same class on a weekday morning or evening.  Just give me a call to see what we can arrange.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, August 25, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Recently I met with Rev. Debbie Head, the new pastor at First United Methodist Church, to discuss creation of a joint children’s ministry between St. John’s and First Methodist.  This would not be a Sunday School class, but rather a ministry program that would meet on Sunday afternoons.  The initial staffing of the program would come from volunteers from our two churches.

In order to get input from parents we are having an informational meeting and pizza supper on Thursday, August 29 at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.   All parents, children and interested adults are welcome to attend.  This new program will only happen if there is sufficient interest on the part of the parents of elementary age children in our two congregations.  So, if you are interested, but cannot make the meeting, please call or email me so that I am aware of your interest.  This meeting is not just for parents!  If you are an adult who loves kids and would consider being part of the program team, please let me know!  This could be a wonderful opportunity for our children.  I look forward to hearing from you and/or seeing you at the meeting on the 29th

The Adult Sunday School class will not be meeting until the Sunday after Labor Day.  At that time we will begin a study of Moses.  More information will be provided as we get closer to the start of our fall class.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

Our Front Porch, a traveling Arkansas nonprofit project supported by the Episcopal Church in Arkansas, is scheduled to stage an event at the Delta Cultural Center on Saturday, August 17, 1-4 p.m.  The event focuses on the traditions of neighborliness and hospitality and makes space for civil conversations.  Included in the event is a fine art show based on the themes of belonging and home, storytelling, and children's craft time.  The activity at the core of the event is the conversation circle. We are looking for community members to volunteer to initiate conversations and encourage others to participate in sharing memories of home.  As all good front porch conversations go, we expect the talk to veer all over the place but beginning with home is a good place to start. Volunteers will not be working alone and must commit to a 1-hour discussion of what the role entails. A working lunch is planned for August 8th at 12:15 at The Tavern in Helena or a phone conference can be scheduled.  The Our Front Porch event is free and open to the public.  We hope you can be a part of this community effort to bring folks together.  For more information call Jeannie Stone (479) 747-0210 or email stonejeannie@gmail.com.  Thank you.
