St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, October 13, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Our Spiritual Development Team at St. John’s has blessed us with two wonderful events during 2019.  We started the New Year with a focus on Centering Prayer led by Rev. Danny Schieffler back in January.  Then, in May we were blessed by Rev. Stuart Hoke sharing his story of being at Trinity Church Wall Street on 9/11.  It was a dramatic and deeply spiritual presentation that those present will not soon forget.  The final speaker of our 2019 series will be Rev. Jos Tharakan of Springfield, Missouri.  Fr. Tharakan is a well known leader of spiritual retreats and conferences.  He will be speaking on the topic Creating a Peaceful Heart.  Fr. Tharakan will be with us on Saturday, October 19, 9 - Noon.  Breakfast will be served.

On Sunday, October 27, at 5:30 p.m. the choir from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Little Rock is traveling to St. John’s to present Evensong, which is a lovely choral setting of Evening Prayer.  The service lasts approximately forty minutes and will be followed by a light supper.  We are so grateful for this twenty-four voice choir coming all the way from Little Rock on a Sunday evening to bless us with beautiful music!  I encourage everyone to come out and support them.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, September 22, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

On Sunday September 29, we will be welcoming Bishop Larry Benfield to St. John’s for his annual pastoral visit.  At worship that morning he will be confirming/receiving ten persons into membership at St. John’s!   Following worship he will be our guest at a luncheon in the undercroft.  I encourage all members and friends of St. John’s to be present to welcome our bishop and provide encouragement to the children and adults who will be affirming their faith in Christ by becoming members of our church.  We sometimes think of the church as a place or building, but according to Holy Scripture, the church is the people who gather to worship God and support each other.  What a joy it will be to witness the confirmation of children who have grown up here as well as the confirmation and reception of adults who are ready to call St. John’s their spiritual home.  It is going to be a wonderful morning at St. John’s!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, September 15, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Sunday, September 29, is the date of Bishop Larry Benfield’s annual pastoral visit to St. John’s. In addition to preaching and celebrating the Holy Eucharist, Bishop Benfield will be baptizing, confirming and receiving persons into the membership of The Episcopal Church. Anyone desiring baptism for themselves or a child is encouraged to contact me to make arrangements for baptism. If you are considering confirmation or reception, you might find the following information helpful:

Confirmation is closely connected to Baptism, and thus we do not confirm a person more than once. The Episcopal Church realizes that there are people who have made mature affirmations of faith in other Christian traditions and who wonder if that affirmation is equivalent to Confirmation. Thus, in deciding whom to present for Confirmation and whom to present for Reception, please let the candidate make the decision based on what the canons state: “Those who have previously made a mature public commitment in another Church may be received by the laying on of hands by a Bishop in this Church, rather than confirmed.” (Canon I.17.1)

Simply stated, The Episcopal Church honors mature commitments to Christ made in other Christian traditions. When that is the case, persons are received rather than confirmed.

Perhaps you are wondering, why should I take the step of becoming a member of St. John’s Church? While reasons for church membership are varied and often personal, I usually point to a couple of reasons that I consider important. First, I think it is a good thing to formally connect with a local manifestation of the Body of Christ as a place of serving Christ and others. Secondly, the polity of The Episcopal Church requires that persons be members of the church in order to serve in certain capacities such as member of the vestry or Eucharistic Minister.

Of course, I happily love and serve all without distinction concerning church membership. I don’t love or serve anyone any less if they are not members and I don’t love or serve anyone in a greater way if they are members. However, it is my responsibility to extend the invitation that “whosoever will may come!” With that in mind, please let me know if you are interested in being confirmed or received when Bishop Benfield visits on September 29.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +
