St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, November 17, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Each year I enjoy watching the changes in the farmland during my drives to and from Little Rock.  The barren fields of winter give way to the green fields of summer.  It seems like every time I make the trip I see how the corn, beans and cotton have grown just a little bit more.  Fall brings the harvest and then before you know it, the fields are barren again.  By November most of the harvesting is complete.  Then, on the fourth Thursday of the month we observe a special day of giving Thanks for our many blessings, including the recently harvested crops.

It is also around this time of year that we observe a more focused emphasis on stewardship.  One part of that focus includes asking our congregation to complete their Estimate of Giving Pledges for 2020.  You will be receiving your card, along with a letter from me, in the mail in the next seven days.  I ask that you prayerfully consider your financial commitment to St. John’s for the coming year.  You may place your card in the offering plate on Sunday, November 24, mail it to the church office or drop it off to Marjie in the office.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s will offer a Thanksgiving Service on Wednesday, November 27, at 6 p.m. at the church.  All are invited to begin their Thanksgiving Holiday by taking a few minutes to give thanks to the One who is the source of our blessings.

   St. John’s Episcopal Church -  Sunday, November 10, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

During the month of November I will be teaching a class on Spirituality and Humor for the Adult Sunday School Class.  The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve come to believe that humor and joyfulness are important elements of genuine spirituality.  One of the resources I will be using is the book Between Heaven and Mirth by Franciscan priest James Martin.  An excerpt from the book says

“Holy people are joyful people…the parables are often the stuff of comedy, and the gospels reveal Jesus to be a man with a palpable sense of joy and even playfulness.  In fact, thinking about a Jesus without a sense of humor may be close to heretical.”

C.S. Lewis said that “Joy is the serious business of heaven,” and the apostle Paul repeatedly encourages followers of Christ to rejoice. I think our experience of joy and laughter in this world allows us to experience a little bit of heaven on earth.

On any given day we face circumstances and events that are very serious and are certainly not to be taken lightly.  Without discounting those things that are solemn, difficult and serious, we will take a look at the healing power of humor and the place of joy in our lives.

The Adult Sunday School Class meets in the undercroft at 9:15.  All are welcome!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, November 3, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Along with many other Christians, Anglicans affirm the doctrine of the Communion of the Saints.  We find this in our Holy Scriptures and we sense it in our hearts.  Simply stated, it means those who have gone before us into the Lord's nearer presence are still with us and are part of the community of faith.  We acknowledge it in our Eucharistic Prayer when we say our celebration of the Eucharistic is with "angels and archangels and all the company of heaven."  This coming Sunday we will be observing All Saints' Day at St. John's. During our Prayers of the People we will read a list of names of our loved ones who have died.  If you would like to remember someone, please contact Marjie in the church office at 338-8115.  Our celebration will continue with a potluck lunch in the undercroft following worship.  Meat will be provided and everyone is asked to bring a dish to share.  I hope you will join us as we remember those who have passed on and enjoy the company of those who are still with us.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, October 27, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

The choir from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Little Rock will be at St. John’s this coming Sunday, October 27, at 5:30 p.m. to present an Evensong Service. Evensong is a lovely choral rendition of Evening Prayer.  The twenty-four voice choir from St. Mark’s contacted us last summer about coming to St. John’s at their own expense.  I am glad they are willing to share their beautiful music with other churches throughout the diocese, and I am especially happy that we are the first church where they will be presenting Evensong.  Please invite your friends and family to join you this Sunday afternoon for Evensong.

On Sunday, November 3, we will be observing All Saints’ Day at St. John’s.  As is our custom, we will be reading a list of names of our dearly departed.  If you would like to add a name to the list, please call or email Marjie at the church office, or place your loved one’s name on the sheet on the table at the back of the church.   A delicious potluck luncheon will be held in the undercroft following the service.  As usual, meat will be provided and everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
