St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, April 5, 2020

GOOD NEWS! This coming Sunday, April 5, our Palm Sunday worship can be viewed online!  Rather than livestreaming, the service, it will be recorded and made available online.    Our organist, Gabe Statom, will provide the music, along with soloist BJ Webster.  Later this week I will send out information about how you can watch the service.  We will also be recording the Good Friday Service and will be putting in online no later than Good Friday morning.

This coming Sunday, April 5, is Palm Sunday.  At first glance Palm Sunday seems like a joyful day.  The gospel writers tell of a cheering crowd welcoming Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. Indeed, there was much happiness on that first Palm Sunday. Jesus seems to be the only one who knew what was really happening.  In the space of a few days the same crowd would turn on Jesus.  Before the palm branches could wilt, the crowd would call for his crucifixion.  Palm Sunday reminds us of how quickly things can change.  We, too, are living through a time of unexpected change. Whether due to social isolation or navigating new ways of doing our jobs, these changes are very disruptive. While our ability to physically gather for worship and study have changed, our ability to be the church has not changed. Jesus said the two greatest commandments are to love God and love our neighbor.  We grow in our love of God through daily prayer, reading and meditating on scripture as well as reading other books and material pertaining to our life in Christ.  We love our neighbor by checking up on those who live alone or who are more isolated than usual.  We also love our neighbor by offering to pick up groceries, prescriptions or other necessary items, if we are able.  Finally, we love our neighbor by contributing as able to those who are experiencing financial difficulties due to layoffs or sickness.

Thank you for the being the Body of Christ to one another during this difficult time.
