St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, September 15, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Sunday, September 29, is the date of Bishop Larry Benfield’s annual pastoral visit to St. John’s. In addition to preaching and celebrating the Holy Eucharist, Bishop Benfield will be baptizing, confirming and receiving persons into the membership of The Episcopal Church. Anyone desiring baptism for themselves or a child is encouraged to contact me to make arrangements for baptism. If you are considering confirmation or reception, you might find the following information helpful:

Confirmation is closely connected to Baptism, and thus we do not confirm a person more than once. The Episcopal Church realizes that there are people who have made mature affirmations of faith in other Christian traditions and who wonder if that affirmation is equivalent to Confirmation. Thus, in deciding whom to present for Confirmation and whom to present for Reception, please let the candidate make the decision based on what the canons state: “Those who have previously made a mature public commitment in another Church may be received by the laying on of hands by a Bishop in this Church, rather than confirmed.” (Canon I.17.1)

Simply stated, The Episcopal Church honors mature commitments to Christ made in other Christian traditions. When that is the case, persons are received rather than confirmed.

Perhaps you are wondering, why should I take the step of becoming a member of St. John’s Church? While reasons for church membership are varied and often personal, I usually point to a couple of reasons that I consider important. First, I think it is a good thing to formally connect with a local manifestation of the Body of Christ as a place of serving Christ and others. Secondly, the polity of The Episcopal Church requires that persons be members of the church in order to serve in certain capacities such as member of the vestry or Eucharistic Minister.

Of course, I happily love and serve all without distinction concerning church membership. I don’t love or serve anyone any less if they are not members and I don’t love or serve anyone in a greater way if they are members. However, it is my responsibility to extend the invitation that “whosoever will may come!” With that in mind, please let me know if you are interested in being confirmed or received when Bishop Benfield visits on September 29.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +
