St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, July 7, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

This week we will celebrate our nation’s Independence Day.  Fireworks, picnics, family gatherings and patriotic programs in communities across our great land will commemorate the heritage of freedom for which so many have sacrificed so much.  As followers of Jesus Christ, we are heirs to spiritual freedom, too.  As I reflect on the theme of “freedom,” I am reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul in Galatians 5:1,

For freedom Christ has set us free.”

Spiritual freedom means freedom from sin and death.  It also means freedom from believing we have to earn God’s love and grace.  Through this freedom we are set free to love without condition and to give without reservation. Christ has “set us free” to love and serve the world in his name.  Thankfully, we live in a nation where we can do that without fear of persecution.  As we celebrate this week, may we also recognize the responsibilities, both temporal and spiritual, that come with freedom.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

The first Together For Hope Team arrives on Saturday, July 6.  There will be about fifteen volunteers from around the country staying in our undercroft as they serve Christ by serving the people of the Delta.  This coming Sunday, July 7, we will have a lite lunch in the chapel to welcome the Together For Hope Team and to get a bit better acquainted with them.   Let’s show them the kind of warm welcome for which the Delta is famous!
