St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, June 3, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

We are starting a new six week study in the Adult Sunday School Class this week!  The title of the class is Short Stories by Jesus and features brief videos of Dr. Amy-Jill Levine from the Divinity School at Vanderbilt University. One reviewer of this study had this to say about Dr. Levine:

As a Jewish scholar and a clever raconteur, Levine is endowed with peculiar gifts to help us achieve her purpose: recovering “the art of hearing a parable,” where context helps us “to determine what is normal and what is absurd.”

Please consider joining us at 9:15 Sunday morning as we begin this short study of some of Jesus’ best known parables.

Earlier this year we gathered for lunch after worship and discussed those things we value and appreciate about St. John’s Church.  Based on that discussion, we have created three teams that will consider how we focus our future ministries on those three dimensions of our life together. Several folks have agreed to serve on each team, but others are certainly welcome. If you would like to be part of one, or more, of these teams, please let Fr. Ray know. The three teams are:

  • Worship and Liturgy
  • Mission and Outreach
  • Discipleship and Spiritual Development

Do you have a tux, or other men's formal wear, that has "shrunk" over the years or that you no longer wear? If so, please consider donating it to the Pop Up Prom Shop.  Last year this group started collecting used prom dresses and they are now expanding their mission to include formal wear for young men. Sarah Melby, who is on the staff at Thrive, along with others from area schools, are coordinating this worthwhile project.  Back in the dark ages I paid $16 to rent a tux for prom.  The cost today is close to $200. If you would like to donate clothes or money to this project you can email Sarah at or drop off your donation at the church and we will deliver it for you.  Thank You!   (See below)

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
