St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, March 4, 2018

From Fr. Ray +

Men’s Retreat at Camp Mitchell

I encourage all men at St. John’s to consider attending an upcoming Men’s Retreat. Perhaps we could get a group and ride over together to Camp Mitchell.  Details are as follows:

The Second Annual Episcopal Men’s Retreat will be held at Camp Mitchell, April 6, 7, 8, led by Rev. Danny Schieffler and Rev. Carey Stone.   The theme is “Jesus: Toward a Healthy Model of Masculinity:  Coming to this weekend will help you understand your strengths and weaknesses as a man and introduce you to the psychological foundations of a mature, authentic, and revitalized masculinity.  Space is limited. Cost is $190 and includes the program, lodging and six meals.  For reservations e-mail programdirector@campmitchell.org or call 501-727-5451.

Evening Prayer continues on Mondays and Tuesdays during Lent at 5:30 p.m. in the chapel.  On Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m., we will have Holy Communion, followed by a simple soup supper and brief program in the undercroft.  I encourage you to make some or all of these weekly services part of your Lenten journey this year.

I will be facilitating two meetings at which you will be invited to share those things you appreciate about St. John’s.   It is from the things that we appreciate that we will determine our most important values and begin the process of better understanding where the Lord is leading us at this time in our journey of faith as a congregation.  These two meetings will be held on Tuesday, March 6 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, March 18 at 4 p.m.  Each meeting will last approximately two hours.  I look forward to hearing your input!

Young Life is in need of meals for their weekly meeting (Club night).  If you would like to provide a meal, please go to https://mealtrain.com/4dv3n5  for additional information and to sign up.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, February 25, 2018

From Fr. Ray +

The Ash Wednesday liturgy that we observed last week, invites us to “…the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word.”

Part of our common Lenten experience this year includes the following:

Monday Evening Prayer led by Father Ray

Tuesday Evening Prayer led by laity

Wednesday Eucharist followed by a simple soup supper

All services will take place in the chapel at 5:30 p.m.  The Wednesday soup suppers will be served in the undercroft immediately following the Eucharist.  Instead of a homily during the Eucharist, Father Ray will share a brief message at the soup supper.

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, February 11, 2018

From Fr. Ray +

This past weekend I was fortunate to attend the Values in Action conference at Trinity Episcopal Church in New York.  Presiding Bishop Michael Curry kicked off the conference with at stirring message on Friday night.  Later that evening, and all day Saturday, a series of speakers continued on the theme of putting our core values into action.  This conference was very helpful as I work on fulfilling the plans I announced at our Annual Parish Meeting a few weeks ago.  At that time, I announced that I will be holding two meetings with St. John’s members and friends to think about the question, “What is God calling us to be and do at this time in our life as a congregation?”  That conversation begins with identifying our core values.  I will be announcing the details of these meeting within the next week. Please be thinking about those things that you most value about our common life as a parish.  I look forward to listening to you as we pray and think together about our future!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, February 4, 2018

From Fr. Ray +

We are barely a month past the joyful beauty of Christmas and already we are on the cusp of the quiet introspection of Lent.  Like our lives, the cycle of the Christian Year can be a bit of a roller coaster ride. There are “up” times such as Christmas and Easter and “down” times such as Lent and Holy Week.  There are long stretches of, hopefully growth, such as the Season after Pentecost and brief bursts of glory like the Day of Pentecost. God is at work in our world and in our lives in all of these times!  We will begin the Season of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 14 with a service at 5:30 p.m. at the church.  The day before Ash Wednesday is Shrove Tuesday, which we will observe with a traditional pancake supper from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church.   I invite you to walk with your church family as together we walk with our Lord through this tumultuous, yet ultimately victorious, period in his life.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make the bishop’s visit last Sunday such a wonderful time in the life of St. John’s Church!  Thank you to those who arranged the luncheon, decorated the tables, made desserts, prepared baptismal and confirmation certificates and supported those who were baptized, confirmed and received.  Congratulations to our confirmands, Rachel Wright, Marzell Moody and LaQuenta Baker, our newly baptized member Amir Akin and to Ben Pittman who was received into The Episcopal Church.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
